Indigenous Bunong communities in Mondulkiri Province celebrated in January the first anniversary of the registration of ‘ Mondulkiri wild honey ‘ as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. It is the fourth local product registered by the ministry as a geographical indication after Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar and Koh Srong grapefruit .
According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Environment Neth Pheaktra quoted by the Khmer Times, eleven communities are involved in the production of wild honey, of which nine communities fall under the protected wildlife sanctuary of Sre Pok and Phnom Prich. He added that a community can harvest up to 50 tons of honey per year and that in total, communities in the province can get around 150 to 200 tons of honey per year.
Mondulkiri wild honey will soon be distributed by Confirel, whose vocation is also to support premium products from Cambodian terroirs.
